REDLANDS, Calif. - The Whittier College women's
lacrosse team opened up its season on Tuesday afternoon and lost to
Redlands, 18-11, despite a four-goal effort from junior attacker
Sherise Varga.
The Poets (0-1) led 2-1 after Lauren Bibby made
good on a free position shot at the 25:52 mark of the first half
but Redlands (1-0) scored the next four goals to take a 5-2 lead.
Whittier answered with a pair of goals from Varga but the
Bulldogs went on their second four-goal run of the afternoon to go
up 9-4 with 26:59 left in the second half.
The purple and gold remained in striking distance as it traded
goals with Redlands over the next five minutes to make the score
11-6 with 20:13 to play in the game. The Bulldogs then used its
final run to put the game away as they scored four of the next five
goals to make the score 15-7 with less than eight minutes left in
the game.
Katie Clinnin scored two goals for the Poets
while goalie Jessica Farrell made 11 saves in the
loss.
The Poets return to action tomorrow, February 25, as they travel
to Claremont, Calif., to face Pomona-Pitzer at 7:00 p.m.
