Poets play hard but fall to a pair of SCIAC foes

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College men's tennis team suffered a pair of losses to nationally ranked SCIAC teams this weekend but not before it put together one of its finest performances of the season. One day after it suffered an 8-1 loss to Cal Lutheran the purple and gold went toe-to-toe with Redlands, but ultimately fell, 6-3.

Frank Sun was the lone winner against the undefeated Kingsmen. Sun won at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 4-6, (10-8).

Despite suffering the loss, Julian Seneviratne went the distance with CLU's Nick Ballou. Seneviratne lost 7-5, 6-3.

Whittier came out of the gate fast against CLU and held a 5-2 lead in doubles at No. 1 and No. 3. The purple and gold couldn't hold the lead and eventually lost, 8-5 at the top spot and 8-6 at No. 3.

On Saturday's game against Redlands Patricio Carregha and Seneviratne picked up their finest win of the season against the nationally ranked team of Cameron Spearman and Anish Nanda, 8-6. Redlands won at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Seneviratne continued his strong play with a win over Nanda at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (3), 6-1. Carregha battled hard at the top spot but fell, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Sun also shined for WC winning at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 4-6, (10-6).

The Poets will face Division-II Cal Poly Pomona next Saturday before it takes part in the SCIAC Championships.
