WHITTIER, Calif. –
The Whittier College men's tennis team suffered a pair of
losses to nationally ranked SCIAC teams this weekend but not before
it put together one of its finest performances of the season. One
day after it suffered an 8-1 loss to Cal Lutheran the purple and
gold went toe-to-toe with Redlands, but ultimately fell,
6-3.
Frank Sun was the lone
winner against the undefeated Kingsmen. Sun won at No. 5 singles,
6-3, 4-6, (10-8).
Despite
suffering the loss, Julian Seneviratne went the
distance with CLU's Nick Ballou. Seneviratne lost 7-5,
6-3.
Whittier
came out of the gate fast against CLU and held a 5-2 lead in
doubles at No. 1 and No. 3. The purple and gold couldn't hold
the lead and eventually lost, 8-5 at the top spot and 8-6 at No.
3.
On
Saturday's game against Redlands Patricio
Carregha and Seneviratne picked up their finest win of the
season against the nationally ranked team of Cameron Spearman and
Anish Nanda, 8-6. Redlands won at both No. 2 and No. 3
doubles.
Seneviratne continued his
strong play with a win over Nanda at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Carregha battled hard at the top spot but fell, 6-4, 4-6,
6-2.
Sun also
shined for WC winning at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 4-6, (10-6).
The Poets
will face Division-II Cal Poly Pomona next Saturday before it takes
part in the SCIAC Championships.
