WHITTIER, Calif. (Mar. 26, 2024) – The Whittier College men's tennis team turned in a good performance against the University of California, Santa Cruz on Tuesday afternoon, splitting the results of six singles matches right down the middle with the visitors from up north.
All three of the Poets' victories came out of the top three singles slots. Junior
Prayag Ahire came into his own playing out of the top singles slot, beating his opponent in straight sets. He won the first set, 7-6, in a tiebreaker, and parlayed his success in some of the match's closest, most exciting points into a 6-1 explosion in the second set.
Freshman
Julius Clasen picked up another win at second singles, albeit in different fashion. Clasen rallied after dropping the first set 6-3 to turn the tables on his opponent, 6-3, in the following set. With the result of the team score already decided, Clasen outlasted his opponent, 13-11, in a super tiebreaker to earn Whittier another key point. The third singles win of the day came on the racquet of sophomore
Yash Nagdev, who controlled his opponent en route to a 7-5, 6-2, victory.
Interim Head Coach
Anthony Sena and the Poets will be back in action (weather permitting) at Saturday, Mar. 30 when they host the University of Redlands for their first taste of SCIAC action this season. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
