WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier women's lacrosse team dropped its second straight game Saturday afternoon as Redlands outscored the Poets 7-3 in the second half en route to a 15-11 win at Memorial Stadium.

The Poets (5-6, 1-3 SCIAC) and Bulldogs (10-1, 1-3 SCIAC) played a fairly even game statistically but a 5-0 Redlands run in the first half proved the difference.

Whittier led 7-3 after Shaina Denny scored on a feed from Carolyn Mukai at the 16:13 mark. However, the Bulldogs rattled off the next five goals to take an 8-7 lead with 1:09 before the half.

Denny ended the Whittier drought with a goal just before the intermission to tie the score at 8-8.

Both teams traded goals through the first three minutes of the second stanza and after Crystal Painter scored on a free-position, the Bulldogs led 10-9. KK McCaslin extended the Redlands lead to two goals but Amiya Moretta kept the purple and gold alive with a goal at the 17:02 mark.

Once again, the Bulldogs pushed its lead to two goals only to see Whittier pull within one. Dana Barraco finished a feed from Haley Kleine with 11:28 remaining in regulation to make the score 12-11.

Nearly four minutes passed before the next goal and with 7:46 left the Bulldogs upped its lead to 13-11. Redlands scored goals at 4:14 and with 32 seconds left to win by four.

Both teams fired 25 shots but Whittier held a 19-13 advantage in ground balls and a 17-10 advantage in draw controls.

Redlands was 4-of-7 from 8 meters while the Poets failed on their only attempt.

Denny finished the afternoon with five goals and two assists. Barraco added a pair of scores as did Raquel Damti. Kleine and Moretta each had a goal and an assist while Mukai had six helpers on the afternoon.

The Poets will return to action on Wednesday, April 6, as they hit the road to face Occidental at 7 pm.
