CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 29 Whittier men's tennis team rolled past Occidental, 7-2, Saturday morning at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center to finish the 2011 SCIAC Championships in the same position they began.
The Poets (12-7, 3-5 SCIAC) took all three doubles matches and won 4-of-6 singles to finish the tournament in fifth place.
The No. 1 doubles team of Julian Seneviratne and Patricio Carregha and the No. 2 duo of Chris Schommer and Frank Sun each won in convincing fashion. The top two doubles team won 8-2 while Taylor Dimler and Ted Wyatt held on for an 8-5 win at the third spot.
Although Carregha sat out singles play, Schommer moved up one spot and kept the balling rolling. The freshman won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
Seneviratne left little doubt in his win at the top spot with a straight-set victory of his own, 6-0, 6-1.
Also scoring for the purple and gold was Juan Luis Perez who played at No. 4 singles. Perez won 6-1, 6-4. Wyatt put a stamp on the win with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the sixth spot.
Sun, who began the year at No. 6 singles, was forced to play in the third position because of injury and fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Dimler was also out of position because of injury and lost in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 10-3, at No. 5 singles.
The win snaps a three-match losing streak for the purple and gold and is the second of the season over the Tigers. Whittier defeated Occidental, 5-4, on March 3.
Next on the docket for the Poets is the Annual Ojai Tennis Championships.
