WHITTIER, Calif. –The Whittier College women's lacrosse team continues to search for their first win this season but will have to wait till next week to get it as their second half comeback fell short to the University of Redlands as they fell 21-15.
The Poets are 0-3, 0-3 SCIAC, while Redlands improves to 4-0, 4-0 SCIAC.
The Bulldogs jumped out early to a 1-0 lead but saw the Poets rattle off four unanswered behind back to back goals from Dana Barraco to go up 4-1 in the first 10 minutes of play.
This got the Bulldogs uneasy at first but they battled back staying in the contest swapping goals with the Poets over the next 10 minutes to get within two at 6-4 with just under 10 minutes to play. Redlands then added two more to tie up the game at 6-6 but saw Whittier take another lead as Brooke Winslow found the back of the net to put the Poets up 7-6 behind a free position shot.
From here Redlands' defense became more stifling and began pouring it on, on offense as they closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a 13-7 lead into the half.
Whittier came out more aggressively in the second and added two quick goals from Carolyn Mukai to cut the lead to four, but Aimee Dewan scored a hat trick over the next two minutes to extend the Bulldog lead to seven.
Whittier added six goals to end the game scoring four of the last six thanks to Winslow, Barraco, and Raquel Damti but it wasn't enough as Redlands held on for the six point victory.
Early in the contest Amiya Moretta received a yellow card for a stick to the head and then received a second in the second half forcing her out of the game. This was a huge blow to the Poets on offense, but they were still able to remain aggressive late as Barraco led the Poets with four goals and an assist, while Lily Baxter finished with three goals and one assist.
The Poets now begin preparing to take on the Tigers of Occidental College, next Saturday, March 3 beginning at 6pm before they open up non-conference play with a matchup against Fort Lewis on Tuesday, March 6 beginning at 6:30pm at Memorial Stadium.
