CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team continues to seek their first victory of 2013 after they suffered a 16-11 defeat to Pomona-Pitzer Saturday afternoon dropping their fourth straight contest.
Whittier now drops to 0-5 on the season, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 3-2.
Pomona-Pitzer opened up the scoring with a 3-0 run before the Poets cut the deficit to one with back to back goals from Carolyn Mukai and Rebekah Delledera. After Lily Baxter pulled the Poets once more within one at the 20:00 mark, the Sagehens closed out the half on a 5-2 run sparked by two goals from Alexa Sarussi. The Poets final two goals of the half were scored by Baxter and Shaina Denny that brought them within four at the break.
Despite Pomona-Pitzer opening up the second half on a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 14-6 the Purple & Gold fought furiously back finishing the game off on a 5-2 run, which included a final 4-0 push that saw three free position shots capitalized on. The four goals came from Denny (2), Baxter, and Mukai. But this final run would not be enough to achieve the victory as PP held on for the five goal victory.
Denny led the offensive unit with three goals on eight shots, while collecting three groundballs and one draw control. Mukai finished the afternoon with two goals on three shots and totaled a game high eight groundballs and seven draw controls.
Whittier returns to action Monday, February 25 when they open up their non conference portion of their schedule when they host Augustana (IL) with game time set for 6:00pm.
