ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team saw their 2013 season come to a close Wednesday evening after they fell 17-10 to Chapman University in the opening round of the SCIAC Post Season Tournament.
The Panthers put on a strong defensive effort in the first half holding the Purple & Gold to a mere goal, which came on a free position at the 6:35 mark from Carolyn Mukai. Chapman used a 3-0 run midway through the frame and within three minutes from Allie Kontny that moved their lead to 7-0 before they went into the half up 9-1.
In the second half, Whittier came out firing on all cylinders looking for the upset matching Chapman goal for goal in the first 15 minutes of action before going on a 4-0 run in a span of 2:30 that cut the deficit to five, 14-9.
But the Panthers regrouped tallying the next three goals that extended their lead for good allowing them to hold onto the seven goal victory.
Mukai finished the game with 4 goals on nine shots to go with six draw controls and a caused turnover. She was joined by Shaina Denny who finished with 3 goals on five shots to go with two caused turnovers.
Despite the loss, sophomore goalie Nicole Yorba finished with a game high 13 saves against 30 shots.
Whittier looks to begin rebuilding for 2014 as they lose Mukai, Drew Kuperman and Hallie Doane.
