WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the University of La Verne Wednesday evening but saw a plethora of scoring opportunities come away empty as they fell 3-0 at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field.
La Verne added the first score of the contest four minutes in from Cassidy Schweiger who bent it in from eight yards out that found the left corner of the goal. They would add their second 24 minutes later from Jamie Weaver who gathered the ball just outside the box coming from keeper Delanie Pacheco. She then carried it into the box and past Poet keeper Caitlyn Schrepfer (Placentia, Calif.) to put the Poets in an early hole 2-0.
Whittier had a look to cut the deficit to one right before the half earning a corner kick in the final two minutes but freshman Blaire Percell's (Temecula, Calif.) shot would be saved by Pacheco that kept the deficit at two.
Out of the half, La Verne picked up the tempo pressuring the Poet defensive unit but they would be up to the task as they would turn away 16 shots. In the 54th minute the Poets had a great look to get on the board. Freshman Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.) put in a ball off a corner that found Maegan Garcia (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) in front of the goal, but her shot managed to hit a La Verne defender who was positioned near post again keeping the Poets scoreless.
The game would go back and forth until the Leos Tatiana Raygoza would have a look at the 75:45 mark but her shot hit off the crossbar. La Verne would get another opportunity however in the 82nd minute when Schweiger added her second of the game. Jamie Weaver carried into the box and after being picked up found Schweiger's feet to her right who then finished to the top right corner of the goal moving the score to 3-0.
Whittier was outshot 23-7 on the evening but held a big advantage on corner kicks 9-5. In goal, Schrepfer picked up seven saves all coming in the second half, while Garcia and Persell led the offense with two shots apiece.
The Poets return to action this Saturday, October 11 when they travel into Los Angeles, Calif. to take on Occidental College beginning at 11:00am.
