WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College men's tennis team fell behind early 3-0 after doubles and couldn't come back as they fell 7-2 to No. 20 Cal Lutheran University dropping to 7-8, 1-2 SCIAC.
Following an 8-5, 8-2, 8-4 sweep in doubles the Poets bounced back to grab wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles but it wouldn't be enough as CLU would grab the lopsided victory.
Freshman Troy Chavez started the comeback in impressive fashion cruising past Sean Handley at No. 4 6-1, 6-3 to give the Purple & Gold their first point on the morning.
Chris Schommer came up big at No. 2 stunning Alex Nichols in straights 7-6 (2), 6-4 and now owns the head to head matchup 2-1.
Mark Anthony Kenney had an opportunity to give the Poets their third point to keep them in the match at No. 5 but he couldn't pull out the third set super tiebreaker falling 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 to Ian Slater.
No. 11 David Konstantinov fell in straights 6-3, 6-3 to No. 35 Moises Cardenas at No. 1 dropping three of his last four matches. Samuel Farmer ran into a tough task with Connor Treacy at No. 3 falling 6-1, 6-3, while Tyler Linscott was swept at No. 6 6-0, 6-4.
Whittier remains at home this Friday, April 4 when they host Chapman University at 2:00pm before traveling to take on Caltech the next day, Saturday, April 5 at 10:00am in Pasadena, Calif.
