Poets open up SCIAC play with 9-0 sweep of Occidental

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College men's tennis team got underway with SCIAC competition Saturday as they cruised to the 9-0 sweep of Occidental College improving to 3-2 on the season.

It took just over thirty minutes to sweep doubles winning 8-3, 8-1, and 8-2, respectively.  Then in singles, the Poets continued with their strong play taking all six matches in straight sets led by sophomore David Konstantinov who edged Josh Dancu, former Division I player from DePaul University at No. 1 6-3, 7-5.

Head Coach Ben Belletto started three freshmen in his singles lineup pulling sophomore Samuel Farmer from the No. 3 slot making room for Troy Chavez (W, 6-2, 6-3), Mark Anthony Kenney (W, 7-5, 6-3), and Tyler Linscott (W, 6-4, 6-3).

Whittier returns to non-conference match-ups this week as they host Texas Tyler (Wednesday, March 12), Biola (Thursday, March 13), Rensselaer (Thursday, March 12), Vassar (Saturday, March 15), and Vanguard (Saturday, March 15).
