COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Whittier College men's lacrosse team wrapped up their 2014 regular season Sunday with a lopsided 17-8 victory over Adams State to finish the season 8-4.
The Grizzlies added the first goal of the game on their first possession from Josh Peterman but the Poets would respond with a 3-1 run with goals from Kevin Ewing, Hunter Hall, and Maxwell Jones.
Whittier managed to outscore ASU in the second quarter getting three straight from Scott Pescheret, Hall, and Danny Prevedel who added his second of the contest at the 2:13 mark giving the Purple & Gold a 7-5 halftime advantage.
Out of the break the Poets stepped up defensively holding the Grizzlies to a mere three goals, while adding four goals in the third and six in the fourth.
Foster Cunningham opened up the half converting on a man-up goal before Aaron Self, Eric Omri, and Tommy Andrews got into the mix moving the score to 11-5.
Despite giving up two goals in the final stanza, Whittier managed to add a crooked number themselves en route to the nine goal victory. The six goals came from Cunningham, Jonathan Kassity, Prevedel, Pescheret (2), and Sean Sternberg.
Nathan Kleponis picked up the win with nine saves, while Thomas Brook had four groundballs and two caused turnovers on the defensive end.
Shots for the game were deadlocked 39-39, with Whittier going 15-18 on clear attempts, while converting on 3-7 man-up opportunities.
