CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team ran into a tough test Wednesday evening in their season opener as they fell 17-4 to Pomona-Pitzer.
The game remained tight in the first sixteen minutes with a combined three goals being scored. The Sagehens led 2-1 as they found it difficult to beat senior goalie Nicole Yorba (Poway, Calif.) who picked up 11 saves before the third goal was tallied en route to finishing with a career high 20 saves for the game.
The first Poet goal came from freshman Angelina Cuevas (Long Beach, Calif.) who capitalized on a man-up situation at the 6:45 mark. The second would come from Rebekah Delledera (Livermore, Calif.) that moved the score to 8-2 at the break.
In the second, the Sagehens put together a 7-0 run that pushed the score to 15-2 before Cuevas added her second with 9:00 to play that stopped the bleeding. In the 23rd minute, Pomona-Pitzer added another two and with two minutes to play Meesha Robinson (Redondo Beach, Calif.) would get into the scoring category with an unassisted goal that rounded out the scoring.
Delledera led the Poets with a goal on two shots, along with four groundballs and three draw controls. Cuevas finished with two goals with both being on goal, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
