READING, PA – The Albright men's lacrosse team rallied Monday with a six goal third quarter to come from behind to defeat the Whittier College men's lacrosse team as they opened up their Spring Break trip.
Whittier led 7-4 at the start of the third quarter before a combined four goals from Mike Southwick and T.J. Holston pushed the Lions out in front 8-7 in a decisive period where they were outscored 6-1.
Albright which extended its winning streak to four straight, improved to 5-1 on the season. Whittier dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
Southwick got the scoring started with an unassisted goal with 11:57 to play in the first quarter. Whittier however responded with four unanswered, keyed by a pair of goals from Jonathan Kassity (San Clemente, Calif.).
Senior Danny Prevedel (Denver, CO) extended the Purple & Gold lead to 5-2 with 13:38 to play in the second period with an unassisted goal but saw the Lions come back with a pair of strikes from Southwick and Derek Stump that cut the lead to one with 4:45 left before halftime.
Kassity picked up his third goal of the game with 3:38 left in the second period giving Whittier a 6-4 advantage at the intermission.
Foster Cunningham (San Anselmo, Calif.) scored a man-down goal for the Poets with 13:35 left in the third that stretched the Poet lead to three, but Ryan Turner for Albright jump started a 7-0 run with his own man-up goal at the 11:57 mark that pulled the Lions within two 7-5.
Southwick made it 7-6 with an unassisted goal and Holsten scored back to back goals soon after that gave Albright an 8-7 lead with 6:58 to play in the third. Matthew Lomady and Southwick would then add another two to extend the lead to 10-7 at the end of three.
Turner capped off the run with a goal with 7:16 to play that made the score 11-7 and Whittier would attempt a comeback with goals from Cunningham and Matt Symes (Coquitlam, BC, Canada) that trimmed the lead to 11-9 but it would be a little too late as the Lions would hold on for the two goal victory.
Freshman Alex Cramer (Rocky Hill, CT) picked up a season high 16 saves in the loss. Kevin O'Donnell (Carlsbad, Calif.) picked up five groundballs and had a caused turnover. Truman Lyford (Temecula, Calif.) had four groundballs and a caused turnover and Scott Pescheret (Eagan, MN) in his first game of the season was 4-19 on faceoffs.
