HACKETTSTOWN, NJ – The Whittier College men's lacrosse team earned their first win of Spring Break Thursday as they held off Centenary 6-4 to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Whittier quickly opened the scoring just :49 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal by Maxwell Jones (Fircrest, WA). The Cyclones' Anthony Biango would respond to tie the game up five minutes later but on the Poets ensuing possession, senior captain Foster Cunningham (San Anselmo, Calif.) would find the back of the net that gave the Purple & Gold a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.
After a scoreless second quarter, Whittier came out of the half and fired away with three unanswered from Cunningham, Jones (Man-Up), and Dan Prevedel (Denver, CO) that opened the game up 5-1.
The Cyclones would mount a comeback though with back to back goals from Trevor Krupinski that cut the deficit to two at the end of the third.
In the fourth, Jones would add his third of the game coming on an assist from Aaron Self (San Clemente, Calif.) that put the Poets back up by three and despite a man-up goal by Michael Balsamo with :45 seconds left in the game it wouldn't be enough as Whittier would hold on for the two goal victory.
Jones led the offense with three goals on four shots. Nick Hernandez (La Mesa, Calif.) had two assists and Scott Pescheret (Eagan, MN) finished with six groundballs, while winning 9-13 faceoffs.
Freshman goalkeeper, Alex Cramer (Rocky Hill, CT) finished with five saves and faced just six shots in his third win on the season.
Whittier remains on Spring Break tomorrow, Saturday, March 21 as they take on Wesleyan (CT) beginning at 3:00pm EST.
