WHITTIER, Calif. – An early 10-0 hole was a tough test to overcome Wednesday evening for the Purple & Gold who fell 15-4 to the Tigers of Occidental College at Memorial Field.
Whittier remains winless on the year as they drop to 0-5, 0-5 SCIAC, while Occidental improves to 2-3, 2-3 SCIAC.
The Tigers jumped out in front quickly with ten unanswered that gave them a 10-0 lead at the half, which included hat tricks from Rebecca Reese and Sierra Slack.
The Poets came out of the intermission fired up however answering with their own run of three which included free position goals from Angelina Cuevas (Long Beach, Calif.) and Melanie Rizzotti (Mukilteo, WA) and an unassisted goal from Meesha Robinson (Redondo Beach, Calif.).
But Oxy would pull it together once again with five straight that moved the score to 15-3 and despite a great goal from Rizzotti coming off a draw control with 8:33 to play in the game, it would be the final goal scored for either team.
Rizzotti was a perfect 2-2 on shots with both being on goal, and had three draw controls. Robinson finished with a goal, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers and Rebekah Delledera (Livermore, Calif.) picked up two groundballs, three draw controls, and had a caused turnover. Nicole Yorba (Poway, Calif.) again posted double digit saves totaling 15.
Slack and Reese each finished with four goals for Oxy, Monica Rosenkranz had four groundballs, and Beebe Sanders had two groundballs, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
Whittier returns to action this Sunday, March 8 as they begin their non-conference portion of their schedule with Marymount (VA) beginning at 12:00pm.
