WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College men's lacrosse team sent their seniors out on a high note Saturday evening as they rolled past the Redmen of Carthage College 14-7 during their home finale.
Jonathan Kassity (San Clemente, Calif.) and Dan Prevedel (Denver, CO) got the scoring started in the first eight minutes that put the Purple & Gold in front 2-0. But the Redmen rallied adding the next three goals to end the first quarter, which included a man-up strike from Jared Ferrell.
Leading 3-2, CC added the first goal to begin the second quarter coming from Remy Giacotto that moved the score to 4-2 but the Poets would respond with their own run of five straight and six of the next seven from six different players that turned the tables giving WC an 8-5 lead at the break.
Out of intermission, Whittier continued where they left off getting another two from Nick Hernandez (La Mesa, Calif.) and Scott Pescheret (Eagan, MN) that extended the lead to 10-5. Prevedel would add another minutes later that kept the margin at four at the end of three before Kassity, Luke Boardman, and Maxwell Jones (Fircrest, WA) put a stamp on the game as they would add the lone goals in the fourth that secured the home victory.
Whittier led in every offensive category, which included shots (39-32), clears (17-18), groundballs (30-22), and face offs (17-25), with freshman Alex Cramer (Rocky Hill, CT) picking up 13 saves in the win.
Jones led the offense with three goals and two assists. Kassity had two goals and an assist to go with three groundballs, while Max Myrick (San Diego, Calif.) and Randy Lukas (Massapequa, NY) caused a combined seven turnovers.
Whittier has two road contests remaining on their schedule. They take on Colorado College again on Friday, April 24 before playing Southwestern (TX) up in Colorado Springs, CO.
