ORANGE, Calif. – A tight match Friday went the way of the Panthers as they earned a big 8-1 win over the Whittier College men's tennis team at Anaheim Hills Racquet Club.
Samuel Farmer (Carlsbad, Calif.) andIan Ross (Altadena, Calif.) despite a strong start faltered late to fall 8-5 to Brett Buford and Charlie Werman at No. 1. At No. 3, David Stanko (Morena Valley, Calif.) and Joseph Laguna (Santa Ana, Calif.) were edged 8-6 by Justin Thompson and Sam Mitteldorf, while the lone win came at No. 2 from Shogo Shimizu (Tokyo, Japan) and Tyler Linscott (Tuscon, AZ) who won convincingly 8-3.
In singles the Poets found it difficult to get on the scoreboard despite strong matches from Farmer, Ross and Shimizu. Farmer couldn't overcome breaks in each set falling 6-4, 6-4 to Justin Thompson at No. 1, Shimizu was broken in each set dropping a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Buford at No. 3 and Ross couldn't complete the comeback against Hunter Morris as he fell in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 4-10.
