CLAREMONT, Calif. – It was a story of two halves Wednesday evening as the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer used a big second half to earn the 15-5 victory over the Whittier College women's lacrosse team.
The game remained deadlocked at 5-5 at halftime but in the second, the Sagehens scored 10 unanswered turning the game into a lopsided contest.
The loss ends the Poets three game winning streak as they drop to 7-5, 1-4 SCIAC.
Rebekah Delledera (Livermore, Calif.) and Angelina Cuevas (Long Beach, Calif.) got the Poets off to a strong start with back to back strikes. Sarah Markowitz ended the run with a goal at the 23:21 mark but Whittier's Delledera would come back again with her second goal that pushed WC's lead back to two.
Markowitz and Rebecca Long would combo soon after that tied the game up at 3-3 before Cuevas would add her second getting fed by Lexie Meanor (Sewickley, PA). A minute later, Long would connect on a free position that tied things up again and Lilly Thomas followed for PP with an unassisted goal that gave the Sagehens their first lead of the game.
With 5:44 to play, Meanor would get into the goal category getting inside the 8-meter for the Poets fifth goal of the game that sent the game into the break as a tie.
But that would be the last goal scored by the Purple & Gold as PP would add 10 straight in the final 30:00 with another three coming from Markowitz and four coming from Ally McLaughlin that turned the game into a lopsided affair.
Delledera and Cuevas each recorded two goals and Meanor had a goal and an assist. Lauren Tudor (Bellevue, WA) was held scoreless for the first time this season but added two assists, six groundballs, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers.
In goal freshman Madison Topping (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) had her breakout game of her career facing 31 shots and finishing with 16 saves.
Whittier remains on the road this Saturday, April 9 as they take on Chapman University beginning at 5:00pm.
