WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Tennis team looked strong Friday afternoon in Orange, Calif. as they made quick work of Chapman University 9-0 to improve to 10-7, 3-1 SCIAC.
The Purple & Gold proved too much to handle for the Panthers as they swept doubles and singles. Andrew You (Arcadia, Calif.) and Thomas Koszowski (Denver, CO) rolled to the opening 8-1 win at No. 1 beating Charlie Werman and Josh Sarsfield.
Chris Palacio (El Centro, Calif.) and Troy Chavez (Temecula, Calif.) kept the momentum rolling at No. 3 winning 8-3 over Darrus Lee and Len Kamemoto.
The battle took place at No. 2 where Hunter Kettering (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Elmer Van Butselaar (Veenendaal, Netherlands) needed a late break to hold off Matthew Mead and Brock DeHaven 8-6.
Head Coach Quinn Caldaron kept his same lineup in singles as they continued their onslaught. Werman was forced to retire at the top spot for CU as You was up 4-1 in the first set giving Whittier a 4-0 lead.
Van Butselaar dismissed Mead at No. 3 clinching the match with a 6-0, 6-1 effort and T. Koszowski rounded out the top three winning 6-3, 6-4 over Sarsfield at No. 2.
The bottom of the lineup proved tough as well with Kettering holding on for the first set win 7-5 before rolling his opponent Lee 6-0 in the second. At No. 6, Maxwell Koszowski (Denver, CO) took out Igor Silva 6-3, 6-1 for the 5th Poet point and Palacio completed the sweep coming back from a set down to force a third edging Len Kamemoto 1-6, 7-5, 13-11.
Whittier returns home to the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts today, Saturday, April 8 as they host No. 2 Claremont-M-S beginning at 10:00am.
