CLAREMONT, Calif. – Despite a lopsided 24-6 loss to Pomona-Pitzer Saturday, Head Coach Sylvia Queener saw a number of positives from the game.
Freshman keeper Jaelin Isquith (Las Vegas, NV) recorded a game high 17 saves against 41 shots and all six goals for the Poets came from first-years. After falling behind 3-0 Whittier finally found the back of the net in the 23rd minute from Loren Sepulveda (Middleburg, VA). Then after a 6-0 run by the Sagehens Georgia Bachiochi (Henderson, NV) tallied her first of the season that made it a seven-goal game.
Another six unanswered by the Sagehens would open things up to 15-2, but right before the half Sam Nimmo (Pleasanton, Calif.) would convert a free-position attempt that gave WC some momentum heading into the break.
Sepulveda kept the run going in the first minute for the Purple & Gold connecting on a free-position. But after that PP found their offense this time with five in a row that moved the score to 20-4. Nimmo ended the run at the 12:43 mark getting fed by Bachiochi and Chella Davdison (Portland, OR) would add the final goal for the Poets at the 9:27 mark getting found by Neely O'Grady (Lorton, VA).
Whittier was outshot 45-9 on the game and 22-10 on groundballs. The Poets were just 5-for-11 on clear attempts and won just nine draw controls.
Sepulveda finished with two goals along with two groundballs and five draw controls. Nimmo also registered a pair of tallies with two pick-ups and two caused turnovers and Bachiochi finished with a goal and an assist.
It has been a tough start to 2020 for the Poets dropping to 0-2, 0-2 SCIAC. They are still seeking the program's first conference win since 2017 when they beat Chapman University in the season finale (15-13).
Whittier remains in SCIAC Competition this Wednesday, February 26 when they travel to take on the University of Redlands beginning at 7:00pm.
