ANAHEIM HILLS, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2021) – The Whittier College men's golf team wrapped up its two-tournament fall schedule on Sunday at the Chapman Quad.
Six Poets donned the Purple & Gold over the two days at Anaheim Hills Golf Course, a Par 71 spanning 6,312 yards. Freshman Cortland Benner (Bend, Ore. / Combine Academy) led all Poets by shooting nine-over for the tournament and had his best day on Sunday when he shot +4. He finished the weekend strong by birdieing on the final three holds of the tournament to overcome a challenging Front 9. Additionally, all three of his final birdies came on three fundamentally different holes (Par 4 16, Par 3 17, Par 5 18), which helped him to a -2 on the Back 9. Benner's final score would also be good for a tie for eighth overall in a field consisting of 28 SCIAC golfers.
Classmate Nadir Khan finished two strokes off of Benner (+11) and sophomore Jackson Bragg (Chico, Calif. / Saddleback College) finished two strokes off of Khan (+13). Khan had arguably the hole of the tournament for Whittier when he started the Back 9 on Friday with a chip-in for Eagle on a Par 4 365. He went on to shoot +2 for the round. Other Poets to compete this weekend included senior Justin McGrath (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif. / High Bluff Academy), freshman Johnny Williams and freshman Tomas Rohrborn. Whittier went on to finish fourth out of the four competing SCIAC teams.
Head Coach Doo Kang and the Poets will return to play this spring when they play at Olivas Links in Ventura, Calif. for the first SCIAC regular season competition on Saturday, Feb. 26.
