LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (Mar. 21, 2022) – Freshman Cortland Benner (Bend, Ore. / Combine Academy) of the Whittier College men's golf team has been named SCIAC Athlete of the Week for his winning performance at this week's Kingsmen Invitational.

Benner won the first tournament of his NCAA career between Monday and Tuesday this past week in Moorpark, Calif. at Moorpark Country Club. Finishing as the tournament's individual medalist, Benner beat out 58 other competitors while shooting a combined 140 over the two rounds logging back-to-back two-under-par rounds of 70. He was one of just two SCIAC players to shoot under par for the invitational and ultimately took down the tournament while displaying a level of consistency well beyond his years. As a team, Whittier finished fourth overall and fourth among SCIAC teams with a combined score of 30-over-par.

Benner and the Poets will hope for another strong team showing when they compete at SCIAC No. 2 on the weekend of Saturday, Apr. 9.
