ANAHEIM, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2021) – The Whittier College women's golf team wrapped up its two-tournament fall schedule on Sunday at the Chapman Quad, which took place at the Anaheim Hills Golf Club.
The Poets competed with three other SCIAC schools and managed to place third above the University of La Verne at the Par 71, 5,983-yard course. Two Whittier players stood out in a tie for fourth with one other golfer. Freshmen Caroline Valle (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista) and Leanne Telle each shot 16-over par, and each player had their share of ups over the two-round tournament. Valle birdied the fifth hole on Saturday, a Par 3 from 165 yards out. She also saved par on seven of her last nine holes on Sunday to finish out the weekend. Telle, meanwhile, birdied twice on the first day of competition: once on the Par 4 sixth hole (364 yards) and the Par 3 seventh hole (118 yards), resulting in a +6 first round that had her in a tie for second-place with a golfer from host Chapman University.
Other Poets to compete this weekend included senior Natalie Gonzalez (Norwalk, Calif. / Santa Fe), who tied for 10th overall in a field that included 28 SCIAC golfers. Gonzalez birdied three times in two days, with two of her birdies coming on the Par 4 sixth and 11th holes, though her best half came on Sunday's Back 9 when she saved par on seven out of the nine holes. Junior Aleena Mendoza (Norwalk, Calif. / Cobalt Institute of Math and Science), and freshmen Jacqueline Torres and Jordan Dahl rounded things out for Whittier, with Mendoza birdieing on two out of the weekend's 36 holes, once per day.
Head Coach Doo Kang and the Poets will return to play this spring when they play at Olivas Links in Ventura, Calif. for the first SCIAC regular season competition on Saturday, Feb. 26.
