POMONA, Calif. (Apr. 10, 2022) – The Whittier College women's golf team finished fifth among seven participating SCIAC teams at this year's SCIAC No. 2 at Mountain Meadows Golf Club, hosted by Whittier along with Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
Senior Natalie Gonzalez (Norwalk, Calif. / Santa Fe) led Poets contributors with a +21 that landed her in 18th amidst a field 44 golfers deep. The senior had her strongest round on Day 2, where she shot an 80 putting her just outside the top-10 for the day. She got the job done with a greater degree of consistency, scrambling to par on 11 holes after birdieing on the 11th hole the previous day. Freshman Leanne Telle finished five strokes behind her senior teammate, shooting an 82 on the final day of the tournament, while junior Aleena Mendoza (Victorville, Calif. / Cobalt Institute of Math and Science) came in just one stroke behind Telle. Mendoza led the Poets on Day 1, shooting an 83 with a round that featured the junior birdieing on three separate occasions and twice to bookend the front nine. Sophomore Caroline Valle (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista) finished the tournament fourth among Poets, but fought back in a big way on Sunday by shooting an 81, just one stroke behind Gonzalez for the team's lowest score of the day.
Head Coach Doo Kang and the Poets will now begin preparation for the 2022 SCIAC Championship Tournament, set to take place over three days at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon beginning on Monday, Apr. 25.
