POMONA, Calif. (April 1, 2023) - The Whittier Poets women's golf team finished fifth at SCIAC #2 Saturday after staging an incredible comeback.

Whittier ranked seventh heading into Day Two, but was able to leapfrog two teams after an excellent second day.

The performance was espeically impressive, given the muddy conditions of the course.

Caroline Valle was the top finisher on the team, placing 19th overall. Valle was especially strong in Round 2, 12th best in the round at +76. 

"Coming into SCIAC #2, I was upset, realizing it's the last month of our season," Valle said, "and I certainly felt this in my first round."

Valle channeled the emotion into Day Two and led her team to a comeback.

"I'm glad that the work we've been putting into practice has been showing in our tournaments, especially this past weekend," Valle said. "I hope the team can end the season on a good note."

Next, Jacqueline Torres finished 24th, and Leanne Telle tied for 25th. Torres also had an excellent Round 2, tied for 13th with a +77.

"Mountain Meadows is already a tough course," Torres said. "But with it being so muddy from the recent weather, it made it even more difficult. I was very pleased with my score. It just feels that much better knowing we are fiishign this season out strong."

Aleena Mendoza placed 31st overall, and Sophie Tipton tied for 35th.

The women's and men's golf teams will compete next in Santa Cruz this Friday.
