COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Apr. 16, 2022) – The Whittier College men's lacrosse team put a late run together and played one of its best fourth quarters of the season at Colorado College on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately came up short against the Tigers.
Freshman goalie Drew Low (Puyallup, Wash. / Graham-Kapowsin) impressed with 16 saves, though late-game offensive efficiency would be the thing to key the Poets' comeback. Whittier outscored Colorado College 5-1 over the final 15 minutes, but closed the game on a 6-1 run thanks to a goal from junior Wiley Burkett (Corte Madera, Calif. / Marin Catholic) to finish out the third quarter. From there, the Poets would need to battle as they worked their way back into contention, and seven minutes of back-and-forth action with the Tigers yielded a goal from senior Ronan Dooney (Portland, Ore. / Central Catholic) to kick start the five tally period. Dooney finished the game with three goals and three assists.
Freshman Noah Wehrman (Aurora, Colo. / Grandview) succeeded Dooney's goal with a quick strike off a faceoff win from junior Joshua Peavey (Corte Madera, Calif. Marin Catholic), making it three-consecutive scores for the Poets. A trio of goals from Dooney, Colorado-native Wehrman and freshman Brayden Legette (Aurora, Colo. / Eaglecrest) closed out the period, one in which the Poets outshot the Tigers, 15-6. In spite of this, the visiting Poets ran out of the allotted time they needed to truly put the home team on the brink. Nevertheless, the Purple & Gold were able to start strong and finish strong on the road. Freshman Kale Lanza (Roseburg, Ore. / Belmont Abbey) led with four ground balls, while Burkett and Dooney accounted for half the Poets' goals.
Head Coach Curt Foxx and the Poets will return next weekend to play their final two games of the 2022 regular season. They will first head to Carthage College on Friday, Apr. 22 before taking on Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday, Apr. 24.
