CLAREMONT, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2023) – Freshman
Mia Piexoto (Salem, Ore. / West Salem) of the Whittier College women's swimming & diving team showed out at the first SCIAC Tri-Meet of the 2023 season. The Poets competed against host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, as well as Chapman University over an exciting day of action.
Piexoto, one of a handful of talented freshman on this year's Whittier women's team, clinched an outright victory in the 200 Breast, clocking in at 2:27.54. Piexoto will be gunning for the program's 200 Breast record as the season continues to progress, which is currently held by Alexa Melara '18. She also secured a second-place finish in the 400 IM, earning a time of 4:41.03 to lift her team's standing in the meet.
Classmate
Nohley Lopez (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills), meanwhile, took third in the 50 Free in one of the most eventful races of the day. She touched the wall in 25.12, one-hundredth of a second ahead of an established senior on the host Athenas. Freshman
Nailyn Lopez (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills) had an outstanding swim in her own right in the 100 Breast event. She placed fourth overall behind a time of 1:09.96.
Saturday also marked the first big of diving action for the Poets, who will have two female divers competing for the team this year. Freshman
Miriam Brownell (Marshall, Mich. / Marshall) and senior
Juli Veneri competed in the 1-meter event, which served as a good stepping stone for a developing diving program led by Head Diving Coach
Eric Lesser.
Head Coach
Michael Jafari and the Poets are looking forward to hosting their first meet of the 2023 season, which will see them go head-to-head with California Lutheran University on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m.
