Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. (Feb. 25, 2023) - The Whittier College women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 22-ranked Pomona Pitzer Sagehens, 23–5, on a rainy and wet Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Amidst a backdrop of record-breaking thunderstorms Thursday night through Saturday, it was a miracle the game was even played. Electricity was out in much of the area, including on the field, but the Whittier Athletics staff employed creative solutions to ensure the SCIAC competition could be played without a hitch.
The Poets fought hard in the contest but struggled to stop the Sagehens and to score themselves. While the box score tells one story, the Poets played tenacious defense throughout the game and made the Sagehens work for each goal they earned on the day.
Senior attacker Samatha Nimmo led Whittier in goals with two, her first coming with 5:07 remaining in the first quarter, thanks to an assist from senior midfielder Chella Davidson.
Nimmo's second goal came off of an assist from senior midfielder Loren Jade Sepulveda.
Three other Poets ended up scores Saturday: attacker Georgia Bachiochi, senior attacker/midfielder Molly Landon, and Davidson.
Junior goalie Haley Hughes-Gill suffered her first loss on the season but boasted an impressive 57% save percentage on the day in goal, contributing 12 saves.
The Poets return to action this coming Wednesday, March 1, to take on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas a home at 7 p.m.
