Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. (March 1, 2023) - The Whittier College women's lacrosse team battled Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wednesday night at home, leading 4-3 with just over three minutes left in the opening quarter. Ultimately, however, the Poets fell to the Athenas, 21-7.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair. The Poets would strike first, jumping out to a 1–0 lead following a goal from senior attacker Georgia Bachiochi off an assist from senior attacker Samatha Nimmo.
Following two consecutive goals from the Athenas, senior midfielder Loren Jade Sepulveda scored her first goal of the contest, tying the game at two. Sepulveda would lead the Poets in goals, scoring three on the night.
After the Athenas pushed the lead to 3–2, the Poets scored back-to-back goals to regain the advantage with 3:10 remaining in the game. The goals came from senior midfielder Chella Davidson and Nimmo (assisted by Sepulveda).
The Poets would only score three more goals from the second quarter on, two coming from Sepulveda in the second and third quarters. First-year defender Julie O'Brien scored her second goal on the season on an assist from Davidson.
The Poets did not make the game easy for the Athenas, playing tight, physical defense physical throughout the evening, making the Atheans earn the win under the lights. Sepulveda was impressive, finishing with three goals, one assist, five groundballs, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Whittier returs to action at Memorial Stadium against the University of Redlands, Wednesday, March 8 at 7 p.m.
