LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (Mar. 4, 2024) – Junior left fielder
Teige Barrett (San Diego, Calif. / Mira Mesa) of the Whittier College baseball team earned himself SCIAC Hitter of the Week for his epic two-game string of performances against California Lutheran University over the weekend.
The Poets were originally meant to play the Kingsmen in the traditional SCIAC doubleheader slot on Saturday, but inclement weather caused one game to be moved to Sunday afternoon while another would be played on the ensuing Monday. Nevertheless, Barrett produced in a big way in the first two games of the series to end the SCIAC week, mashing a pair of home runs and six RBIs to go with his 5-for-7 turn of hitting. Though not countable for the week, he cranked another home run into left field against the Kingsmen in Monday's game and would later draw an intentional walk, but on Sunday, he accounted for five of the Poets' six runs to help the Purple & Gold win its first series over Cal Lutheran in eight years. Also of note, Barrett transfered over to the pitcher's mound in ninth inning to pick up the save, adding yet another notch in his belt for the weekend.
The Poets are now 3-3 in SCIAC play, having already played two of the perennially top programs in the conference.
Barrett and the Poets will now embark on a lengthy road swing down south, competing against a handful of legitimate Division III programs in Texas. They will start their road trip on Saturday, Mar. 9 against Concordia University Texas.
