REDLANDS, Calif. - The Whittier College men's
tennis season came to an end on Saturday afternoon in impressive
fashion. The Poets defeated Occidental, 5-4, in the fifth place
game and Sean Robertson was honored with a place
on the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
second team.
Robertson went undefeated in singles play throughout the
tournament and won 6-3, 7-6(4) over Mike Kuhn of Occidental at No.
1 singles to secure his place on the all-conference team.
The Poets (15-7) won 8-6 at No. 1 and 8-2 No. 2 doubles and
held a 6-2 advantage at No. 3 doubles but surrendered the final six
games of the match. Whittier led 2-1 through doubles.
Robertson's victory at No. 1 gave the Poets a 3-1 lead but
Occidental rattled off victories at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles.
Frank Sun won a three-set match at No. 5
singles as he outlasted the Tiger's Stefan Pastor, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
The University of Redlands has a 10 court facility but the
third-place game was being place at the same time as the
Whittier-Occidental match. That delayed the start of
Gavin Smith's deciding match at No. 6 singles.
Smith left little doubt as he rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win.
Last season the Poets finished seventh in the final SCIAC
standings. The fifth place finish is the highest ranking even for
Whittier.
Next weekend the purple and gold will send 11 athletes to
Ventura County to play in the individual Ojai Tournament. The top
four will play in the Division III draw while the remaining seven
will play in the Independent draw.
