WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College men's
soccer team fell to a bit of bad luck on Saturday morning at the
Graham Soccer Field as Pomona-Pitzer handed the Poets their first
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss, 3-0,
in front of a crowd of 50.
The Poets (2-3, 1-1 SCIAC) surrendered the eventual game-winning
goal with just one-second left until halftime. Pomona-Pitzer (4-2,
2-0 SCIAC) corralled a lose ball on the right-side of the box and
Erik Munzer just beat the horn to give the Sagehens a 1-0 advantage
at the intermission.
Whittier had its opportunities to tie the game but couldn't find
the back of the net. DJ Covarrubias placed a
header just wide of the goal and Sam Russell had
three good looks at the net but sent the ball just wide.
Pomona scored again in the 74th minute on a header off a
throw-in. Wynn Sullivan tossed the ball into the box towards a
crossing Jason Engle who headed it past keeper Paul
Stepler-Camp (6 saves).
Taylor Ayres relieved Stepler-Camp late in the
second half and gave up a penalty kick in the 88th minute.
The Poets and Sagehens were even on the scorecard in shots (20)
and corner kicks (5) but it was Pomona-Pitzer who was whistled for
31 fouls to Whittier's 10.
WC returns to action on Wednesday, September 23, as they travel
to face SCIAC foe La Verne at 4 pm.
