WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team again playing without key starters held an early 1-0 lead Wednesday night but couldn't hold it as they fell 2-1 to Claremont-M-S.
Freshman Jacob Conlon (Fullerton, Calif.) continued his hot streak as he added his third goal in two games scoring in the 25th minute putting the Purple & Gold on top. A throw in came in from Ricardo Pena (Bell Gardens, Calif.), which deflected off of Yvan Monreal (Placentia, Calif.) and finished by Conlon with a header.
But the lead wouldn't hold up as CMS would continue pressuring the ball adding the equalizer in the 41st minute from Hunter Pinson who put it away in the box coming off of a free kick from Michael Crowley.
The game remained tied up at 1-1 at the break with CMS holding the advantage 10-4 on shots.
In the second, the Stags had four opportunities early but came away empty. Whittier then responded with a great look from Pablo Gomez (Cardiff by the Sea) and another two from Jacob Schaniel (San Diego, Calif.) and Monreal but all three came up empty as well as the game remained deadlocked.
The next five shots would come from CMS with the last being the eventual game winner off the foot of Mehron Abdi who headed in a cross from Crowley off a free kick that moved the score to 2-1.
Whittier was then forced to play catch-up and would get off another two shots but Gomez' would be saved by Stag keeper Daniel Cui and the other from Pena was sent wide allowing CMS to escape with the victory.
The Poets were outshot on the game 19-9 but were able to grab four corner kicks. Gomez led the offense with four shots with two being on goal, while Jorge Rivas (Lake Forest, Calif.) picked up three saves in goal.
Whittier remains at home this Saturday, October 10 as they host Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 11:00am.
