WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team continues their hot streak as they pulled off their second overtime victory on the season 2-1 over Cal Lutheran University.
The Purple & Gold are now 4-0-1 over their last five games and have gone into OT in three of their last four match-ups. They improve to 7-3-1, 6-1-1 SCIAC and now sit in a tie atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.
The first half was back and forth and remained scoreless until the final minute when RayRay Roberson (Albuquerque, NM) was able to put WC on top 1-0 at the half. He received a ball just outside the box and carried possession before tucking a shot just inside the left post.
The one-goal advantage would hold for 24:00 minutes into the second half until the Kingsmen were able to add the equalizer coming from Aaron Winsick. He received a pass at the 25-yard line before taking a strike that just snuck in below the crossbar. After that WC continued to press getting off another three shots coming from Banks Telkamp (Seattle, WA), Ian Nicolas (Concord, Calif.), and Matteo Loi (Kirkland, WA). But two the ensuing strikes would turn up wide and the other would get stopped by Kingsmen keeper Antonio Welch.
Each team got off three shots in extra time. CLU picked up a quick corner kick and got a header on frame within the first minute but the shot would end up high. Whittier then came down and got their first look off a corner kick from Nainoa Loschky (Bellevue, WA) who found the head of Hayden Barnouw (Seattle, WA) in the box but his shot would end up just missing high over the crossbar.
A minute later though Whittier would regain possession with Parker McDonald (Corona, Calif.) getting off a look, which would hit the crossbar and drop in the box. The rebound would get recovered by Loschky who would finish with a one touch volley near post that sent WC to the OT victory.
Teddy Nickerson (Seattle, WA) who was the SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week last week played all 98:10 finishing with four saves against five shots. Telkamp led the offense with six shots, Alejandro Trujillo (Buena Park, Calif.) added three and Nicolas Barrera (Bellflower, Calif.), Loschky, Roberson, and McDonald would each get off a pair.
Whittier held the advantage on shots at 20-12, which included 10 coming in the second half. They also posted nine corner kicks to CLU's three.
Whittier travels this Saturday, October 19 to take on Chapman University beginning at 7:00pm. The Panthers are coming off an upset win 1-0 over previously unbeaten Claremont-M-S.
