LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2024) -- Three members of the Whittier College women's soccer team earned All-SCIAC recognition per an announcement from the conference office.
Senior midfielder
Juliana Hodgson (Fullerton, Calif. / Sunny Hills) and sophomore forward
Madeline Traylor (Covina, Calif. / Charter Oak)Â garnered First Team All-SCIAC recognition, while junior midfielder
Alanis Cervantes ( La Habra, Calif. / La Habra) landed on Second Team All-SCIAC for a second time.
Hodgson, who has long been an incredible presence in the midfield due to her defensive abilities, had a breakout offensive season to co-lead with Poets with four goals. She also had three assists, but would have had five goals on the season had the Poets' game against Southwestern University not been called at halftime due to the rising temperatures. Prior to the half, Hodgson had scored on a free kick, but she nevertheless will ride off into the sunset as one of the SCIAC's premier players of 2024.
Traylor,
last year's SCIAC Newcomer of the Year did not display the goal-scoring ability she did last year, but made up for it in a big way with four assists. Meanwhile, her speed constantly kept her rivals on the back foot and allowed the Poets to become one of the conference's better teams in terms of maintaining possession and controlling outcomes.
Cervantes, meanwhile, showed what an offensive weapon she could be in the center midfield. The junior proved to be a great partner for Hodgson in the midfield, but also stood out on her own and broke out against Chapman University on Senior Day with two assists before launching a deep shot from the right side that found its way into the back of the net for the game-winner. On the season, Cervantes finished with two goals and five assists, and will undoubtedly be a player to watch as the Poets look to make it consecutive postseason appearances in 2025.
