Jim attended Santa Paula Union High School, where he served as student body president and won seven varsity letters in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. At Whittier he lettered three times on the Poet Baseball team and once in Basketball. He was All Conference SCIAC in baseball in 1966 and 1967, was student body Athletic Director in 1965 and a member of the SCIAC baseball team that played in Holland in 1966. 

A Major League Baseball pitcher from 1969-79, Jim played for the Chicago Cubsuntil 1972, when he was traded to Milwaukee and became the Brewers first 20-game winner. Traded to Kansas City in 1977, he won 18 games and pitched a “no hitter” for the Royals. He went to the Seattle Mariners in 1978 and retired in 1979. He played in several all-star games. 

Jim, who was a Rotary Scholar and studied in Edinburgh, has his BA degree from Whittier College. He was inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame in 1984 and is currently serving the Chicago Cubs Triple A affiliate in DesMoines, Iowa, as pitching coach. 

He is married to Whittier College alumna Jennifer Sands. They live in Ventura and have three daughters and a son.
