  • Leland Jones was the first to the contingent of football athletes to come to Whittier College from Coronado High School
  • He first enrolled at Pomona College so he could take ROTC and then transferred to Whittier in 1919
  • He was a 3 year letterman and First team member of the Football Teams of 1919, 1920 and 1921
  • He was captain of the Poets first Conference SCIAC Championship in 1921
  • He also won one letter in baseball in 1920
  • He was the older brother of Raymond Johns, another outstanding Whittier Athlete among the several who Migrated to Whittier with their Coach, Esek Perry
  • He was a strong athlete and a great leader.
