Roy Newsom grew up in Pico Rivera, attended Whittier High School and came to Whittier College, where he graduated in 1934. After earning a Ph.D at USC, Roy returned to Whittier College in 1939 to teach Chemistry, becoming a chairman of the department in 1940. He was appointed Dean of the College in 1963 and became Vice President for Administration in 1970, serving during the tenure of both Presidents Paul S. Smith and Fred Binder. Named as President of Whittier College by the Board of Trustees in 1975, Roy held that position until 1979.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Roy served as chairman of the college faculty’s Athletic Board of Control, as faculty athletic representative and for many years as secretary-treasurer of the SCIAC Faculty Athletic Committee. Roy is credited by all who knew him as the person who set the tone for the athletic program at Whittier College.
Roy Newsom believed in a strong college-community connection, feeling that excellence in athletics, as well as in academics, reflected well on the college community and brought recognition to the city as well. We honor him for his strong and lasting commitment to the athletes of Whittier College.
Inducted as honorary member, March 14, 1993.
