Dick is a graduate at Loomis Preparatory School in Wethersfield, Connecticut, where he won four letters in track. At Whittier College he was an economics major, a member of the Franklin Society and Student Body President. He was captain of the tennis team, the cross country team and the track team. His track team was the first Poet team to go to the Drake Relays NAIA Meet, where they won the four-man mile relay. Dick also held the Poet record for the 880 and the mile.

After graduation, Dick taught school for three years and then enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II, where he saw service in Sicily, Salerno and the Normandy landing. He finished his service career as a full Lieutenant.

For over twenty years he was a successful businessman and has now retired to Carmel, California.
