Beginning a swimming career at Redlands High School in 1975, Pat was team captain of the JV swim team his sophomore year, moving on to varsity the following season. As team captain, he placed first in the 100 Breaststroke and 200 medley relay in the Citrus Belt League Championships and qualified for the California Interscholastic Federation Championships and the National Junior Olympics his senior year.

At Whittier College, Pat earned swimming letters all four years. He was the first male Poet swimmer to earn All-American honors; being named All-American in 1978-79 for the 200 Breaststroke and All-American in 1979-80 for both the 200 and 100 Breaststroke events; again in 1980-81 he earned All-American honors as a member of the 400 medley relay team. Pat achieved all-SCIAC honors in 1979-80 in three events. He set a school record in 200 Breaststroke and held then-current SCIAC conference records for the 100 breaststroke at 59:66, the 400 medley relay at 3:38.76, and the 400 freestyle relay at 3:13.13. In 1980-81, he finished first in the 200 Breaststroke and second in the 100 Breaststroke at the SCIAC championships after coming back from two broken arms.

Pat served as team captain and was named Most Valuable Player both his junior and senior years. He was named Whittier College male athlete of the year in 1979-80.

Since graduation, Pat has been swimming with the Monterey Bay Masters. He currently lives in Santa Cruz with his wife Nancy and children Leslie and Casey.
