Mike attended Punahou High School in Honolulu, Hawaii where he played football, basketball and baseball. He attended Yakima Junior College in Washington and the University of Hawaii, playing football at both schools. 

As a transfer student, Mike entered Whittier in 1976 and became a two year varsity letterman. He earned All Conference SCIAC first team defensive back honors and first team NAIA All District in 1976. In 1977, Mike was named All conference SCIAC first team defensive back for the second year as well as All District NAIA and All American NCAA Division III first team safety. He was credited with seven interceptions and 110 tackles in his senior year. 

Although Mike started training camp with the San Francisco 49ers and then the Kansas City Chiefs, he decided instead to return to Hawaii and become a teacher. 

Mike, along with his two sons and wife, lives in Waimanalo, Hawaii, where he is currently employed in the shipping industry.
